Prognosis

Many babies treated medically do recover well and make full recoveries. Babies who have undergone surgery may have longer recoveries, but they too can recover exceptionally well.

Other babies can have more complex recoveries and developmental difficulties have been linked to some babies who have had NEC.

​

The devastating thing about NEC is it can be life threatening and very sadly some babies may not be well enough to have surgery and for other babies they might sadly die after surgery.
