Recovery and Complications

The length of time the recovery will take varies to each individual baby. In many cases milk is usually re-introduced gradually 10-14 days after feeds are stopped. It may also take a few days for a baby to finish antibiotic treatment or other medications.

Sometimes complications are possible, especially if there has been surgery to the bowel.

These complications are:

  • NEC might return

  • Problems with wound and infection

  • Some babies may develop problems with milk tolerance and Diarrhoea

  • The bowel may become narrower causing a stricture

  • Some babies may have problems with food absorption and growth

  • Some babies may have Short bowel syndrome

  • Some babies especially very premature babies can have developmental delays.
